LAWYER AND MEDIATOR
I am available as an independent mediator to assist in helping resolve a wide range of disputes or conflicts in a facilitative way. I can also assist and advise in the design and set up of dispute resolution process. I have particular experience in working with Māori organisations, and with issues arising between Māori and non-Māori entities, as well as issues or relationships with a strong tikanga Māori component to them.
I am a Fellow of the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand, and am an authorised mediator under the Farm Debt Mediation Scheme.
In general, mediation is a voluntary, confidential process in which a neutral third party — the mediator — helps parties work towards a mutually agreed resolution that will work for them, not one that is imposed on them. Mediation is typically faster, less costly, and less adversarial than court proceedings, and because the outcome is agreed rather than imposed, parties are far more likely to comply with and benefit from the result. It is particularly well-suited to situations where ongoing relationships matter.
My approach to mediation includes working closely with parties before mediation to understand the different positions and needs of the parties, and design a process that gives everyone the best chance of reaching a resolution. Throughout the mediation process I understand the importance of preserving and repairing relationships, as well as finding a prompt and workable solution. There are a variety of ways to approach mediation – though the earlier things start the better.
